What's Holding You Back from a River Cruise or International Travel

An old couple traveling together

As I've navigated the Travel Agent world of river and ocean cruising, I've seen several "trends" in what holds people back from planning that dream vacation they've always wanted to take when they "retire".

Today I want help you understand that there are some myths that can be busted, and there are work-arounds to ensure you're completely comfortable with your plans.

Here are some of the issues you may have when thinking about planning that cruise, and what can be done about it:

Medical tourism travel health insurance concept

1. Health Concerns:

As we age, unfortunately, things don't always work like the used to. It's a fact, but not something that has to stop you from traveling. In fact, a cruise is a great way to travel when you have mobility issues. Cruise lines are set up to ensure that people with mobility concerns are comfortable during their adventure.

On-board cruises, you have access to medical professionals to assist with common illnesses. However, should you be on a cruise and need emergency medical attention, it can be costly (at least on an ocean cruise when you're not within close proximity of land). One of the most important things I help my client navigate through is health insurance. I am not an insurance sales person, and I'm not qualified to tell you which one is best for you. However, I can lead you in the right direction and share my personal experiences. I work with you, so together we an ensure you have adequate coverage abroad.

While on land, you'll notice the Farmacia's almost everwhere you roam. These small pharmacies are very helpful when looking for that common medication - ibuprophen, aspirin, IcyHot, lol.

Concerns about managing existing health conditions while traveling. It is essential you take sufficient amounts of your current prescriptions, and I always suggest packing a few extra days "just in case."

2. Mobility Issues:

Limited mobility can make it challenging to participate in excursions. Stairways and uneven terrain in historic destinations can be daunting. Concerns about the accessibility of cabins and onboard amenities. Mobility is a priority with cruise lines. In fact, if you prefer an electric scooter, travel agents have ways to ensure you can be accommodated.

Learning foreign languages (audiobooks)

3. Cultural and Language Barriers:

Worried about communication problems in non-English speaking countries. Honestly, I have to admit that the first international trip my family ever took was to England. Why? Of course because we "speak the language." One thing we constantly laugh at now is that with the dialect and accent (not sure who had one, us or them), we definitely didn't speak the language. I asked for a napkin and they couldn't figure out why I wanted a diaper. Yeah, it's a real problem - but there's a solution to that. If you take a little bit of time prior to traveling to look up some key words and download the Google Translate app on your mobile device, you'll find you can communicate with very little problem, and most likely some smiles along the way. I'll never forget the smile on the cook's face in Strasbourg, France when I "tried" to tell her in French that it was delicious.

Familiarity with local customs and etiquette. This is another thing that can be easily overcome with a little prep work. I try to always send out a Destination Guide to my clients so they have a little heads-up about the customs, culture and eitquette of their destination(s).

Understanding and navigating local transportation and services. The world of transportation in Europe and the Caribbean are vast. Many of the most popular countries in Europe have worked out some amazing transportation options. From subways to trains, and Uber and taxi's it might not be a complicated as it sounds getting from Rome to Civitavecchia to get to your cruise. With the planning done right, you'll have everything you need in the palm of your hand - and yes, sometimes that includes Google Maps.

Transportation, import export logistics

4. Travel Logistics:

Coordinating travel to the embarkation port, especially if it involves long flights or multiple segments can be a struggle for sure. Making sure you arrange the transportation prior to your departure for your trip is a make or break decision. There are times that a taxi is the best option. Working with Gotta Luv Travel, we guide you to your best option that takes into consideration time and value for your money.

Managing luggage, particularly with lower stamina for carrying heavy items. I spend a lot of time explaining to my clients how their luggage is going to be handled. For group or private tours, you may be free to pack a little more, because that is all taken for you. No heavy lifting on your part. However, if you're going to spend a couple of extra days prior to or post tour/cruise, remember, unless you plan it ahead of time it will be your responsibility to get those bags down the cobblestone streets of Venice to the hotel.

Meal preferences and dietary restrictions. In today's world, with all the processed food offered everywhere you go, it is a huge concern for those that have food allergies, restrictions, or just plain like a vegan, vegetarian or require kosher meals. Fortunately, the partners we work with at Gotta Luv Travel are very accommodating for dietary requirements. We just need to know in advance so we can ensure your needs are met.

5. Safety Concerns:

Safety concerns about unfamiliar locations and potential scams targeting tourists. Unfortunately, the world is the world, and people are people. No country is immune to dishonest people, and you must be aware of your surroundings wherever you visit. Being a smart traveler includes being aware of how you hold your personal items, and not laying them down unattended. Some simple things that can make a huge difference.

Concerns about the security of belongings while on excursions is also a thing for some people. I can say that almost every place you stay will have a safe in the stateroom or in your hotel room. My advise is to secure any valuables in the safe when you leave for the day - including your passport. Afraid you're going to leave something in the safe upon departure? Yep, that happens. I always put one (only one) of the shoes I'm going to wear home in the safe, so when I get dressed to go home I have to look for my shoe!!! Works every time.

6. Technology Challenges:

Juggling new technologies for travel arrangements, boarding passes, and communication is also a concern for many people. Not everyone is tech savvy - and that is why it's a great idea to have an itinerary that holds all of the details and documents you need on your mobile device. Many of these itineraries can be accessed on or off line, so you don't need internet access to view them, so no extra cost involved.

Staying connected with family and friends while abroad is another thing I get a lot of questions about. I have a document that has a list of travel apps. that are very helpful. I send that out frequently to my clients. I will give you a hint - WhatsApp is one of the best user-friendly apps to use while traveling - as long as you have your family download it as well. It's not like a text, as each communicator must have the app on their device, but once that's done, it's free to use.

7. Gaining Confidence:

For those new to cruising, unfamiliarity with what to expect and how to prepare is where I come in! I prepare you to know step-by-step what to do and what to expect. I will send you a video of how to read your itinerary, and will answer any concerns you have so that you're comfortable with the plan.

Feeling overwhelmed with planning details and itinerary customization is another thing that people have a difficult time navigating. Sure you can plan your trip online with the different websites, but do you truly know what you're getting? Travel Advisors have a huge collaboration of colleagues that help each other, so we know we're getting the best and the best value for our clients, while taking the stress and overwhelm off their shoulders.

What to do about it?

Understanding these challenges can help us tailor our services more precisely to meet the needs of our valued clients. Let's emphasize how Gotta Luv Travel has the expertise and resources to address these concerns and make their dream river cruise, ocean cruise or any trip in Europe and the Caribbean an enjoyable and stress-free experience.
